South Australia's only UNESCO World Heritage site (inscribed 1994 alongside Riversleigh in Queensland as the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites property). The twenty-eight caves preserve a continuous 500,000-year fossil record of Australian animal life — marsupial lions (Thylacoleo carnifex), giant kangaroos (Procoptodon goliah), the five-metre snake Wonambi naracoortensis — accumulated as the caves operated as natural pitfall traps, dens, and roosts. The Wonambi Fossil Centre, named after the prehistoric snake whose own scientific name borrows from the Aboriginal Rainbow Serpent, is the visitor hub above ground. Guided tours range from family-friendly Alexandra Cave (stalactites, illuminated chambers) to the headline Victoria Fossil Cave (the World Heritage excavation site, ongoing palaeontological research), the Blanche Cave Bat Tour, and adventure caving requiring helmets and ropes. Twelve kilometres south of Naracoorte on Bunganditj Country, managed by NPWS South Australia in collaboration with the Burrandies Aboriginal Corporation. Open daily except Christmas Day.
Multiple cave tours available. The bat observation centre operates during breeding season (Nov-Feb). Booking recommended for school holidays.
