The tallest permanent single-drop waterfall in Australia: 268 metres straight off the escarpment from Stony Creek, into a gorge 51 kilometres west of Ingham. The pool at the base is twenty metres deep. The site sits in the Wallaman section of Girringun National Park — renamed from Lumholtz National Park in 2000 in recognition of Girringun, the ancestral creator of the Warrgamaygan, Jirrbal, Warrgamay and Girramay peoples — on the traditional lands of the Warrgamaygan, who manage the park jointly with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the Wet Tropics Management Authority. From the wheelchair-accessible viewing platform at the top, the falls drop in a horsetail plume into the rainforest gorge below; the 800-metre Bangguruu Walk and the longer Djyinda Walk take you down toward the base. The surrounding Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest is among the oldest on Earth, supporting cassowaries, platypus, and rare endemic plants. Camping at Wallaman Falls camping area (book via QPWS). Wet-season closures apply to the Stony Creek swimming hole; check current alerts before you go.
Stay on marked trails and behind safety barriers. Rocks near waterfalls are extremely slippery. Swimming at the base may be prohibited during high water flow. Carry rain protection. This is an easy visit suitable for most fitness levels.
